Undrallu Naivedhyam (Savoury rice dumplings) is one of the most favored of current trending foods in the world. It is simple, it is fast, it tastes delicious. It’s appreciated by millions every day. Undrallu is a traditional Andhra style steamed dumplings made with rice rava or broken rice, chana dal, ghee and cumin seeds. We make these Undrallu as a naivedyam during Ganesh Chaturthi / Vinayaka Chaviti festival. Kudumulu or undrallu are Andhra style steamed rice balls similar to Modak. Undrallu or Rava Kudumulu, Modak, Modakam, Uppu Kozhukattai, Upma Kozhukattai, Pidi Kozhukattai….however you name it, this is one among the various Kudumulu varieties.

The ingredients needed to make Undrallu Naivedhyam
(Savoury rice dumplings):
- Take 1/2 cup Rice Rava / Broken Raw Rice
- Take 1.5 cups Water
- Take 1 tablespoon Bengal Gram/Chana Dal
- Prepare 1 tablespoon+ 1 teaspoon Ghee
- Prepare 1 pinch asafoetida
- Prepare 1/2 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
- Prepare to taste Salt

Instructions to make Undrallu Naivedhyam
(Savoury rice dumplings):
- Soak the chana dal in water for 30 minutes. Drain and set aside.
- Heat 1 tablespoon of ghee in a heavy bottomed pan
- Add the asafoetida,cumin seeds and let the seeds splutter.
- Add the soaked chana dal and saute for 2 minutes.
- Now add water and let it come to a boil.
- Once boiling, add rice rava and salt to it
- Mix well cook covered a low flame for 5-7 minutes by stirring occasionally
- Once the mix comes together, turn off the heat and leave it aside to cool down a bit.
- Once the mix is cool enough to handle, add 2 teaspoon ghee and mix
- Grease your hands and take a small portion out of the mixture.
- Shape it into a round ball.
- Repeat the same step with rest of the mixture
- Set a steamer/idli cooker on stove with 1 cup of water to boil
- Place the prepared balls on idli plates
- Place the idli plates in the idli cooker
- Steam cook the undrallus on a high flame for 10 minutes.
- Switch off the heat, but keep the undrallus in steam for sometime,after which take them off on a plate
- Offer to the lord as naivedhyam
- Serve your family while warm,on a bed of peanut chutney(or any chutney of your choice)

Paala Undrallu & Kudumulu - Vinayaka Chavathi Naivedyam Today is Vinayaka Chavithi aka Ganesh Chaturthi festival, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, God of Wisdom and Prosperity. It is celebrated on the Suddha Chavithi day (the fourth day after the no-moon day) of the lunar month Bhadrapada maasam (August/September). Undrallu are traditional steamed dumplings from Andhra Pradesh and usually made during Ganesh Chaturthi or Vinayakaya Chavithi Festival. Traditionally, undrallu made with rice rava or broken rice but I have replaced the rice rava with wheat rava or broken wheat to prepare Godhuma Undrallu.
